EI Quote of the Week
The greatest discovery of my generation is that human beings can alter their lives by altering their attitudes of mind.
— William James
3 highlights from our Forbes conversation with the Director of Leadership Development at the LA County Department of Health Services, Yvonne Banzali about her team's ATD BEST Award-Winning Program:
1/ They created a 360 assessment with a twist
Instead of stopping at how a leader is rated, their in-development 360 assessment asks direct reports a second question: “If this is how you’re rating your particular leader, what are you going to do to help support their growth?”
2/ They’re developing the Nexus Institute, a space devoted to behavior change and on-the-job application
“If you want transformation, the training itself isn't the answer. It’s how you build the conditions around it that makes the difference,” Yvonne explained.
The Institute will extend beyond workshops and learning labs to include microlearning tied to performance systems, mentoring communities, alumni reunions, facilitation kits, and tools leaders can use with their own teams.
3/ Leadership moves from “execution centered” to “environment centered” in the AI Era.
Leaders increasingly create value by shaping the conditions under which their people can perform, adapt, and stay engaged. As Banzali put it, “The more we are advancing technologically, the more we need to invest in human capital.”
Reports from McKinsey, The World Economic Forum, and LinkedIn all indicate that as AI commoditizes rote work, enduring human skills will be more valuable than ever—skills like agility, resilience, cross-functional collaboration, and decision-making.
The good news is that all of these skills are a matter of emotional intelligence, which is a highly trainable skillset.
